Most people outside Africe do not know Captain Traore, the President Burkina Faso. But for most African’s, he is the heoric face of the New Africa.
For centuries, colonial powers have conquered and exploited Africa, leaving the vast continent in bloody civil wars, continuous coups, poverty and deep despair. But this common image of Africa is starting to dissolve fast.
The reason for this is one Captain Traore, the present President of Burkina Faso. A few years ago, Traore staged a successful coup and siezed military and policcal power. Many thought. Oh no, another dictator has arrived.
But Traore is different. He used is presidential powers to radically address the poverty of his country. He distributed lands. He supported the land distribution with support for agricultural production.He started massive instrracture projects linking once isolated villages with each other. He took control of the gold of his country to fund his developmental projects. He asked the country’s former colonial masters to exit Burkina Faso. They were more trouble than help.
The former ruling domestic and global powers that ruled Burkina Faso did not like what they were seeing. Not only were they losing their grip on the country. Worst, Traore’s example fanned patriotic sentiments all over Africa. Countries started to follow his example. If this wave of reform continued to sweep Africa, then it was goodbye for all colonial powers that held tight control over the lives of millions of Africans.
So dark powers did the only thing that they could do. The stages assassination attemps – lots of them. But Traore survived them all. His popularity and fame now extended beyond Africa. He has even invited Russia to help stabilize the situation. Russia has sent military support to Traore. And more nations are starting to provide support for Traore’s beleaguered government.
The drama surrounding Traore’s rise to power and the global repercussions generated, bear watching. If his opponents do not succeeed in killing him, the face of Africa will change more rapidly than anyone will have ever imagined.
That then would send a burst of light and inspiration to all oppressed peoples around the world. They would have the courage to do their share, given their circumstances, in removing the scourge of manipulation, lies, exploitation, and totalitariansim around the planet.
